Bitcoin ownership by corporations

Estimating the exact percentage of the total Bitcoin supply owned by corporations is dynamic, as companies' holdings can change. However, based on recent reports:

  • Public Companies: Publicly listed companies are reported to hold around 3.3% to 3.63% of the total Bitcoin supply. This figure has been steadily increasing.
  • Total Corporate Holdings (Public and Private): When considering both public and private companies, reports suggest businesses now hold over 3% of all Bitcoin in circulation, with some estimates as high as around 3.48 million BTC (which would be a higher percentage of the 21 million total supply, though not all of that is currently in circulation).

It's important to note:

  • MicroStrategy's Dominance: A significant portion of these corporate holdings, especially among public companies, is concentrated with MicroStrategy, which is by far the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin. 1   1. MicroStrategy - Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org
  • ETFs: While not "corporations owning BTC" in the traditional sense, Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) hold a substantial amount of Bitcoin on behalf of their investors. These ETFs now account for a significant percentage (around 6.59%) of the total Bitcoin supply, and this is a growing category of institutional ownership.
  • Other Categories: Besides corporations, significant amounts of Bitcoin are also held by individuals (including the estimated holdings of Satoshi Nakamoto), governments, and Bitcoin mining companies.

Therefore, while corporations directly own a notable percentage, the overall institutional and large-entity ownership (including ETFs) represents a larger portion of the total Bitcoin supply.
